The Great Urban Race has just left Atlanta. If you were in Atlanta this past weekend you probably were wondering why there were people racing around the city with official numbers on and costumes. It was none other than the Great Urban Race! Our Atlanta Bed and Breakfast, Shellmont Inn was contacted months ago to be one of the locations. The Great Urban Race uses your city as the puzzle pieces where you solve clues, complete challenges and race for cash. You will be given a clue sheet with twelve cryptic clues and the race begins at noon and you must complete the course by 5 p.m. You can use your smart phone, take public transportation and of course your brain! Return to your beginning gathering spot and turn in your information, business cards and photos from each location. The top twenty-five teams receive an invitation to the National Championship Race. The top three teams receive cash prizes and free entry into the National Championship. Congratulations to the Beer Googles who completed the race in 1.46, Team Snappy Dappy, 1.48 and 2 Native Americans came in at 1.51.
Best of all the funds help support St. Jude Children’s Hosptial!
We had to come up with a challenge for the racers. Brain storming with the representatives from the Great Urban Race we decided to take a spoon and put a sea shell in it and catapult it into a cup approximately 8 inches away. We were inspired to use seashells because of the exterior shell on the inn, as well as the many shells on the interior of our Atlanta Bed and Breakfast.
You won’t believe it, but one team did it on the first try, the Giraffe and the Zookeeper! Three teams did it on two attempts and some teams took forty-five minutes to accomplish it. We were told it was one of the hardest challenges. It took the winning team, the Beer Googles, one minute to get it.
We could not have done this with our Wonderful Volunteer Family from Eaton Corporation!
Next up on the Great Urban Race schedule is Portland, Oregon on April 12th and Philadelphia on April 26th, 2014. Hope to see you at the next Great Urban Race!
