High Museum of Art presents Go West, Art of the American Frontier, from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, just blocks from our Atlanta Bed and Breakfast. Enjoy over 250 paintings, sculptures, photographs and Native American artifacts on display from November 3rd, 2013 through April 13th, 2014. In coordination with the High Museum of Art, the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia is presenting Today’s West from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. It is a rare opportunity to be able to see two exhibits on the American Frontier within an hours’ drive time.
Go West, highlights our childhood heros and American Explorers, such as Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley and Chief Sitting Bull by showcasing their visual images and their impact on American culture and character. I am looking forward to seeing the paintings of Yellowstone Park by Thomas “Yellowstone” Moran. In 1893, twenty years after Yellowstone Park was dedicated as America’s first National Park, artist Thomas Moran was hired by Northern Pacific Railway to paint scenes of Yellowstone to drum up business for the railway. When you are looking at Moran’s famous painting, Golden Gate, notice the railway trestle in the background.
If you like black and white photography like I do, don’t miss photographer Carleton E. Watkins. Watkins was mesmerized by the west and ended up in San Francisco as a photography apprentice. In 1861 he traveled to Yosemite Valley and took the first of hundreds of mammoth plate prints. His photo, View Down the Valley, Yosemite, 1865-1866 showcases Cathedral Rock and Half Dome and is typical of his prints of the region. Many of these prints were used to convince President Lincoln to designate Yosemite as the first state park in 1864. Of course, it is Ed’s dream to climb Half Dome with his climbing partner, Stefan!
